Pronatura Center Program of Information for Conservation
In the past years, the importance of organization, abstraction, and analysis of information has been more widely recognized, due to the fact that most of the existing data in some fields is neither organized nor systemized.
The Pronatura Central Program of Information for Conservation (CPIC, for it’s initials in Spanish), has the mission of administrating, generating and updating digital cartographic information, as well as databases about biologic, geographic, social and legal aspects of the Yucatan Peninsula. The main tools of this center are Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Remote Sensing (RS) and photogrammetry. The analysis, management and use of information will permit the hierarchical structuring of conservation areas, as well as monitoring, identification and characterization of treats, protection, use and management of natural resources. Such information is used by different sectors according to their particular objectives.
The CPIC is designed to support and complement other programs of PPY, as well as collaborating with research centres, governmental agencies and other organizations, creating strategic alliances in favour of the conservation of the natural resources of the region.
One of the most important themes of the CPIC is the systematization of information, in order to make it more accessible to different users. This center is focused on the design of GIS’, as are:
•Modeling of species distribution.
•Hydrological analysis (distribution of river basins and selection of slopes viable for conservation).
•Multicriterion analysis for selection of representative priority ecosystems.
•Vegetation analysis.
•Geomorphologic analysis.
•Edaphic analysis.
•Climatic analysis.
•Socioeconomic analysis.
This program has supported local and regional projects generated by other programs of the organization.
